The Cuz's

July has been a super busy month, due mostly to my sister visiting with her crew. They live way across the country, so we don't get to see them that often. Fortunately, when she does come, I steal her camera card and take all of her pictures so that I suddenly seem way more adept at photography than I really am.

at the drive-in, while King was trying to escape and roam free in the weeds

don't you sometimes wish you could still sit at the kid table?

I love how this shows their growth with their legs

 movie night!

this picture just makes me laugh, from cross-eyed Rachel to Kamille's gansta face

summer is not complete without a lemonade stand

I love how these 5 get along like they're always together, they just gel. Something about their ages this visit was just perfect - they never fought. Can't get better than cousin besties.

Christmas Miracle

Almost as exciting as finding out that we're all healthy and that Kingsley is cruising into the world of underoo's was the discovery that this is the year I was able to get *drumroll* ...really good Christmas pictures!! YAY!!
All of my favourite photographers popped up with mini-sessions for Christmas when I was overwhelmed with Kingsley-health-drama or were for days I wasn't available, so I was royally bummed thinking I had missed our shot when like a star in the sky my friend Laura announced that she was going to do Christmas mini sessions and we could have a spot! I have been stalking Laura's photography skills for years on her blog, so I was just a wee bit excited when she decided to go pro. The day of our pictures all of the stars aligned in our favour: no one was sick, no one was overtired, everyone had two eyes that were working together, no one was rapidly losing functioning of their body, it wasn't too hot, wasn't too cold, outfits coordinated and fit and were still clean at the time of pictures... you can't ask for more than that. Oh, except maybe for a great photographer, which we also had.

Ugh, so sweet.

Like a Pig in...

The other day, my friend Jen was over hanging out with us. It was a gorgeous May day and we were lounging on a couple of lounge chairs, half paying attention to the kids.

OK, probably not even half paying attention.

some of those kids were trying harder than others to get our attention

I was vaguely aware (based on the number of fights I was breaking up between the girls regarding water sharing) that there was some big developments happening in the sandbox and that there was a lot of water being mixed in with the sand. I recall warning the girls a couple of times not to let Kingsley in the water.

When dinner time arrived, I headed on over to the sandbox to bring Kingsley inside and found this:

Rachel isn't hurt back there, she's just relaxing

Then, Kingsley showed me that he had learnt a couple new awesome words from Cordelia while we weren't paying attention: "FWO MUN!" which translates into THROW MUD.

Oh, yes he did.

See those brown lumps there in front of him? Those were his pretty blue and white AFO's sitting snuggly in his pristine-because-he-doesn't-walk sneakers. And he was wearing white socks.

This was the day Kingsley had his first hose down.

I have to give a big, huge THANK YOU to the for adding me to their list of the 24 Mom Blogs You Should Be Reading I'm absolutely flattered and really happy to share my King with others.  Kinglsey is blowing bubbles of thanks, too. ;)

*drum roll*

I promised pictures.

All we've been doing is a lot of living and fighting colds. And more colds. And more colds. I went nearly 2.5 years without getting sick at all - I think it was the universe's way of recognizing that I had quite enough going on, tyvm, but that time has passed. I've had probably three colds in the past two months, maybe four, I can't remember. For some reason, my children love sneezing in my face, wiping their nose on my cheek, drooling on my pillow, and any other disgusting way they can find to ensure that if they're sick, I'm sick. It's working.

Anyway, between these lousy colds, here's what we've been up to.

We went skating again. Kinger, Cordelia, and I went with a friend of mine. Both Kingsley and Cor amazed us! They had a great time, no complaining and both attempted going out on their own! Kingsley didn't quite have the strength to dig the picks into the ice and push off, but he did a nice job of tapping the ice and had tons of fun being pushed around and around and around.

It was my birthday! My mom brought this lovely hat over for me. You should've seen King's face light up when he turned around and saw it on my head. I have no idea why, but Kingsley loathes toques, but will wear any other type of head wear without complaints.

Kingsley also seems to be convinced that every time Happy Birthday is sung, it is sung to him and him alone. He loves it. He also likes to cover his ears when he's really excited about something.

Kingsley is a moving machine lately. He is so comfortable going up and down and over and back and every which way. He's great. It seems crazy that just a few short months ago, I was in tears over him suddenly being able to get up on all fours. He practically lives in this position now.

I don't know what it is about this picture that I love so much. It just captures him so well - the blurred arms as he reaches out and signs for me to pick him up, the determined look in his eyes as if he's daring me to NOT pick him up, the way his mouth is mid MOOOOOOMMMMM!!!

My kids are born yogi's. Kingsley has very tight hamstrings, but the rest of him is bendy like his sisters. This is a bit freaky to see him bend back over his Bumbo in real life, but when he wants something, he figures out how to get it.

The weather here has been GORGEOUS! We didn't have much of a winter at all and it suddenly feels like spring. I even have tulips and rhubarb starting to pop up. It's crazy. It's King's first spring/summer officially on wheels, so we've been a little scrambly on how to make outside work for him. He wanted to crawl in the grass and on the driveway, was convinced that he could go over curbs and would get SO MAD when he'd get stuck. every. single. time., loved chasing the girls down the sidewalk, and had a total blast in the sandbox. We will figure this out.

The girls are spending the night with Jeff's mom and I desperately needed some way to keep Kingsley happy, as I am nowhere nearly as entertaining as they are. I took him to Michael's to get a few things for Rachel's birthday party and we ended up in the back corner of the store. King so badly wanted into the EMPLOYEES ONLY door. He kept going at it from different angles, as if I wouldn't notice if maybe he backed in to the door instead of going forward, or maybe he could just sidle up next to it... This is the action shot of him backing in to it.

After Michael's, we hit the library. To get him OUT of the library, I had to put something really interesting in his hands (so I could steer him out!). I found a Backyardigans DVD. I don't know how it happened exactly, but King has fallen in love with Tyrone from Backyardigans. I love watching him watch this show, he gets so excited. He laughs and dances and laughs and dances and yells MOM!! MOM!!!!! to make sure I know each and every time Tyrone comes on screen.

To fill the time after nap, before dinner, we went to my parent's house. Kingsley had some fun in the doll house. Literally IN the doll house.

He tried very, very hard to get through this little door. He could get his head through and that's about it. Good effort, buddy.

My Dad will shake his head at how horribly cropped this picture is, but I do not care ;) I love watching my Dad play with my kids. He's so good with them, which kind of always catches me off guard. Kingsley adores him. I can still hear the joy in my Dad's voice when I called to tell him that I was having a boy - he's the fifth grandchild and first boy. He adores his granddaughters, but as this was his last shot at having a grandson, I think he was quite relieved to finally get a grandson.

That is it!

Monkey See, Monkey Do

The girls have been teaching Kingsley some new things.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5...

So... Pinterest, right? Weird site. I don't entirely 'get' it, but I do find myself opening the app and suddenly hours have passed and I regret it when I have to get up in the morning. On one of those random nights in which I look at things done by people far craftier than me, I stumbled upon a picture of a row of cousins all wearing shirts with their age on them. Awesome!

My brother does not have children and my sister has two who happen to be born on the alternate years that I did not have kids. That means that from September 2 until January 8 of any given year, our kids are sequential in age - so right now they are 1 (Kingsley 2010), 2 (Karis 2009), 3 (Cordelia 2008), 4 (Kamille 2007), and 5 (Rachel 2006). In two weeks Kam will turn 5 and ruin it all ;) but for now, we decided we should try recreating that very cool idea.

We gave it a valiant effort.

first, add the big girls

second, add the little ones. give numbers. so far, so good.

practice smiling. hmm...

add backdrop and hold up your numbers!

demonstrate how to hold up numbers for Kingsley - which he thinks is funny

intervene with the little ones.

Kingsley is annoyed with my attempts to get him to actually HOLD the number.

ok, numbers on the toes then. pretend I'm still holding the backdrop correctly.

fleeting attempts to revive the photo shoot.

...and we're done.

Now scroll back up and look at Cordelia in all the pictures. She makes me howl.

Rachel is a pro.

We plan on doing this whenever they/we visit. I think it'll be cute to see over the years.

Whole Lotta Christmas Going On

I know Christmas is generally a busy time for everyone, but for us, this year was/is exceptionally insane. We have been going nonstop for about two weeks now. It started on the 15th with Kingsley's MRI and my aunts passing, which of course meant family time as my relatives came to town for the visitations and funeral. The funeral blended into our first Christmas when my brother and sister-in-law were home. The next day we hosted Jeff's extended family. Then we got our Christmas miracle and had our second Christmas with my sisters family. A triple date to see Stuart McLean was next and both girls had their Christmas concerts and last days of school that week as well. Then another Christmas party and we had Christmas Eve and of course the big day itself. Boxing Day was lower key, but was followed by early birthday parties for Kingsley, my sister and my niece, which rounds us out with today when the girls went to the theatre with Jeff's mom and I did a little too much online shopping with all my free time (oops). We have two more parties this week and 5 playdates to arrange for next week while everyone is off. No biggie. ;)

Fortunately (for me) my sister being home means that I got to have someone with a really awesome camera take all the pictures! There are so many cute ones, I cannot possibly post them all, but here's a glimpse at our awesomely insane Christmas 2011.

day one of the insanity - waiting for the MRI with Daddy

my brother and sister-in-law gave King this ridiculously cute hat. he loves it and wears it all the time.

put my girls and my sisters girls in a room together and what do they do?
Jillian Michaels workouts.
for real.
even Kingsley was entertained.

pretty much sums up my thoughts on that first week.
(can you see his scar? people have noticed it a lot more with his recent haircut)

hey! it's me! still feeding Kingsley. sigh.

tracking Santa's progress on Norad.

could hardly handle the cuteness on Christmas Eve.

it is really really really really really hard to get a good picture of all 5 kids at once.

time for bed!
um. yeah, those are the same pj's as last year. they still fit! if it ain't broke...

Christmas for 11 = a very full tree

one of my favourite gifts for Kingsley.

wowing my sister and brother-in-law with his wheeling abilities. I can't count the number of times people watched him with amazement as he rolled around over the past few weeks.

"So many girls. So much giggling. So much squealing."

Phew! OK, I'm done. I have a lot more exciting news, but that's another post! ;)

It's Thanksgiving weekend and so far, it's all kinds of fabulous.

We've had a change in weather from rainy and cold to blue skies and warm breezes. Heavenly. The weather has made us run outside to enjoy the change in seasons before the gross November weather hits.

And since we were outside anyway, we took our fall pictures! My friend Silvia and I have been doing this for four years running now. We are not photographers or anything and honestly, we take nearly 1000 photo's between the two of us and magically end up with about 50 that make us look really talented ;) Toss in some fancy editing and we've got shots for the walls.

...and this year!
Who is this little man??

A half a second after I took this picture, Cordelia turned around crying because Kingsley didn't want to hold her hand, just Rachel's. She was devastated.

(I tried to get one of Kingsley like these in the leaves, but he wanted nothing to do with it. Just screamed until I helped him sit back up)

If you've been keeping track of Kingsley's development over the last year and a half (and why wouldn't you be?? ;)) then you'll notice something incredibly exciting about that last picture. Yep - check! - Kingsley can officially sit on his own now. Two hands up doing stuff, back nice and tall, nothing behind him 'just in case'.  He takes his time, but he gets there. I am very thankful for that. :)
